Symptoms of a head injury
When someone suffers a head injury, they may vomit, but this is not a sign of a serious medical emergency. However, children will often vomit after a head injury because vomiting can obstruct the airway and cause a concussion. If vomiting does occur, you should assume the person has suffered a neck injury and apply ice to the area. If you are not sure of the location of the head injury, consult a doctor.
In general, if the head injury is a minor one, you may want to call your doctor and ask them to perform an x-ray. In more severe cases, you should seek emergency medical care immediately. If your symptoms are mild but you do not feel well after a head injury, ask someone to check on you periodically. If you think your head injury is severe, you should contact your doctor right away and avoid driving, playing contact sports, or taking any non-prescription medication. You may also need to take time off from work while you recover. In any case, you should call 911.
Treatment options
Patients who have suffered a head injury may benefit from rehabilitation. If their initial injuries were mild and they show significant improvement within the first few days, they are likely to benefit from the rehabilitation program. However, a more serious injury or a patient who is not improving quickly enough to be discharged from the hospital may require continuous care. Outpatient therapy is a common choice for patients with moderate injuries. But there are also risks associated with early treatment, such as increased risk of developing a complication.
Patients who have sustained a severe head injury are at greatest risk for long-term disability. The results of treatment are far from clear. About 25 percent of severely injured patients make a full recovery, whereas about a third experience a mild disability. A few percent of severely injured patients are left permanently vegetative. There are various types of treatment for head injuries, including surgery, physical therapy, and rehabilitative rehabilitation.
Treatment of a concussion
If you have experienced a head injury, the first step in treating it is to visit your doctor for a thorough examination. A doctor will check the person’s medical history, examine the head, neck, and face, and may perform neuropsychologic testing to determine if the person has suffered a concussion. Depending on the severity of the injury, a person may be able to recover on his own, but for severe cases, a physician may recommend an urgent or emergency visit.
Although rest is the best treatment for mild brain injuries, more severe cases may require physical and occupational therapy to address the mental side effects of the head trauma. In addition to physical therapy, counseling may help the individual cope with the injury. Research shows that almost 1.7 million Americans suffer from a traumatic brain injury every year, with 75% of these injuries being mild. More severe cases, however, send 223,000 people to the hospital and cause 60,000 deaths.
Treatment of a linear skull fracture
A linear skull fracture is caused by a blow to the head. In a simple linear fracture, the fracture may heal on its own. In more complex fractures that involve associated traumatic brain injury, the healing time will be longer. For this reason, it’s important to seek a second opinion and make sure that your doctor’s diagnosis is accurate. Multiple studies have shown that patients who receive a second opinion often receive a partially correct diagnosis.
In addition to the pain, you should also seek medical treatment if you notice any signs of brain damage or bleeding. Depending on the severity of your fracture, you may experience a bruise behind the ear or around your eye. CSF may drain from your nose or ears if your skull has been fractured. Surgical treatment may be necessary if your fractured bone has penetrated the skin. If you have a linear skull fracture, call 911 right away and go to the nearest emergency room.
